A laboratory where they evaluate your ability to maintain balance

On 25 March 2023, the RTVS show “Generation” was broadcasted, in which the RTVS staff visited the Motor Regulation Laboratory of the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology CEM SAV (CEM SAS).

Movement and maintaining balance is an essential part of our daily life. An important factor affecting the ability to maintain balance is a person’s age. Ageing can be accompanied by a significant deterioration of balance, manifested by limited mobility or even loss of balance with subsequent, often repeated falls. Instability or the consequences of falls negatively interfere with daily activities and reduce the quality of life for older people.

How we can objectively evaluate the function of balance, what such a measurement looks like, and how our stability changes with age and Parkinson’s disease was clarified by Dr. Diana Bzdúšková and Dr. Jana Kimijanová from the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience, Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology CEM SAV.
